Semantics and Pragmatics: From Experiment to Theory -
A long-standing puzzle in the semantics/pragmatics literature is to explain why disjunctive statements such as 1a license conjunctive inferences such as 1b. 1 The fact that we infer 1b from 1a is surprising, because in all standard modal logics a sentence of the form p ∨ q does not entail the corresponding sentence p ∧ q.
Hence, this thesis consists in the experiment to develop a further analysis and to check out its consequences with respect to the semantics and pragmatics of explicit performative utterances and the new interface emerged.
Jun 06, 2018 The goal of this workshop is to bring together experimental and theoretical work on the pragmatics of quantifiers beyond “some” and “all”. In particular, we welcome submissions presenting work on the effects of quantification on implicature and presupposition.
Binding theory. More binding theory;. Semantics. Applying Theories of Word Meaning. Try and think of an experiment to find out if you can still think even if.
The aim of this book is to present essays centered upon the subjects of Formal Ontology and Logical Philosophy. The idea of investigating philosophical problems by means of logical methods was intensively promoted in Torun by the Department of Logic of Nicolaus Copernicus University during last decade.
Semantics and Pragmatics of Number 4 Morphological vs. Semantic Markedness Farkas and De Swart 2010 take issue with Sauerland’s 2003 assumption that singular is semantically contentful while plural is number-neutral.Semantics is the study of the meaning of words, utterances, and other forms of communication. As a research specialty, Semantics involves a very active and diverse group of researchers who study meaning from both a cognitive, experimental, typological, and formal perspective.
Theories of Lexical Semantics offers a comprehensive overview of the major traditions of word meaning research in linguistics. In spite of the growing importance of the lexicon in linguistic theory, no overview of the main theoretical trends in lexical semantics is currently available.

Semantics and Pragmatics of Number 3 Anti-presuppostion Theory Sauerland 2003, 2008 b and Sauerland, Anderssen, and Yatsushiro 2005 propose that the plurality inference of a plural noun phrase is an anti-presupposition that is generated in competition with the singular. It is not easy to look at words and sentences and decide what they really mean. However, even if we have a way of deciding the meaning of sentences or utterances from the words they contain, we still have a problem. For example, many Japanese people say that they usually do not express themselves directly; Continue reading Pragmatics I →In Semantics and Pragmatics From Experiment to Theory, ed. by U. The goal of this course is to get an overview of different experimental approaches to topics in semantic and pragmatic theory, with a particular but not exclusive focus on issues relating to number and quantity. Course requirements. Everyone who comes to this class is expected to do the readings and participate in the discussion. In this paper we explore the relations between pragmatics and our new theory of con text. Our argument will be that pragmatics needs an explicit and general foundation, a general theory of the relations between language use or di scourse, on the one hand, and relevant properties of the social situation, on the other hand.We join these literatures by showing how semantics and pragmatics interact. Specifically, we carried out an experiment to examine how the importance of clear semantics in conceptual models—operationalized in terms of ontological clarity—varies depending on the pragmatics of readers' knowledge of the domain shown in the model.Jun 03, 2014 Date/Time Wednesday, Jun 5, 3pm Location 32-D461 Speaker Matthijs Westera University of Amsterdam Title A pragmatics-driven theory of intonational meaning I present a compositional semantics for Dutch/English/German intonation that crucially treats high phrase accents/boundary tones as signalling conversational maxim violations.
